Layers of color on a single printing plate make gorgeous monotypes and monoprints. Learn how to modify Akua Intaglio inks for a myriad of effects.

Modifying the viscosities of inks leads to results unachievable any other way. Just as peanut butter will not stick to jelly, a loose ink will reject a stiff ink. This is true of traditional oil inks as well as newer, soy oil-based Akua Intaglio inks. Exploiting ink interactions yields multi-color prints from a single plate, and naturally leads to sequences of related images.

Stacking layers of ink on one plate rather than separated on multiple plates, eliminates the need for multiple runs. With resists used as stencils, contrasting colors can be dropped in next to each other. Parts of an image can be protected from an over roll, and viscosities can give new dimension to relief blocks, stamps, texture tools, and cutout stencils.

This workshop will introduce and deepen your understanding of how to mix, modify, and use inks to their full potential.

Piramidal Grafica WorkshopPiramidal Grafica Workshop – Guanajuato, Mexico
With Catherine Kernan
Ink Interaction / Cultural Interaction
March 29 – April 5, 2020

Location: Guanajuato, Mexico
Costs: $1350 includes

$650 for 6 nights Room and breakfast / Studio fee, and 6 lunches / Welcome dinner
$650 for instruction
$50 Materials fee

Workshop Description:
Printmaking in response to a new environment can stimulate and expand our vision and grasp of the possible. Exploiting and expanding on our varied experiences in printmaking, both traditional and experimental, we will incorporate influences suggested by the context of a foreign culture.

Techniques selected for the situation could include: collagraph, relief blocks, drypoint, trace transfer, reductive, additive, and viscosity monotype and monoprint, and the use of a variety of matrices, brought, found, and invented. Some part of the workshop will involve field sketching / painting / and collecting of materials to print. Each participant is encouraged to develop in their personal direction with critical input from the group and the instructor.

The workshop will be taught with soy-based Akua inks and ink modifiers, and will lead to richly layered monotypes and monoprints, both as singles and in series. No toxic fumes and extended workability of the inks make it a liberating and environmentally responsible experience.

Cost: $600

Exploiting ink interactions by modifying the viscosities of the inks and layering them on a single plate yields multi-color prints, and naturally leads to sequences of related images. Stacking layers of ink by rolling on one plate rather than separated on multiple plates, eliminates the need for multiple runs and yields edge conditions achievable no other way.
Learn how to modify Akua Intaglio inks for a myriad of viscosity effects. Just as peanut butter will not stick to jelly, a loose ink will reject a stiff ink. This is true of newer, soy oil-based Akua Intaglio inks as it is for traditional oil inks.

With resists used as stencils, contrasting colors can be dropped in next to each other. Parts of an image can be protected from an over roll, and viscosities can give new dimension to relief blocks, stamps, texture tools, and cutout stencils.

Since no clean-up is needed at the end of every session, more unexpected transfers happen with soy-based inks. The timing is more relaxed and there is no rush to the press.

This workshop will introduce and deepen your understanding of how to mix, modify, and use inks to their full potential.

One Week Immersion: Monoprinting with Relief Time and Again #41Blocks and Akua Inks
July 27 – 31, 2020
Making Art Safely
Santa Fe, New Mexico

Taking advantage of new technology, this workshop will introduce the use of computer-controlled machinery to cut blocks from your image. These blocks will be used to learn the vast range of creative printing approaches that Catherine uses in her own work. Other blocks may be cut, by hand or machine, as needed and to learn the processes. Maker’s shops have spread across the country. You will come to understand how to use them for your creative work while saving you great amounts of time. Each participant will send a digital file in advance so the first blocks will be cut and ready to use on the first day. Pre-workshop consultation with Catherine about your images will be offered.

Using the pre-cut blocks, we will learn how to modify them by hand as needed, and how to ink and print them in a wide variety of ways, but almost never straight up directly from the block. Some of the approaches are: off-setting to plastic or wood with either ink or resist for viscosity rolling; lifting ink with the wood block using tissue or a texture layer; printing face to face with two blocks; and double layering with resist for complicated viscosity layers. An integral part of the learning curve will be modifying and mixing of Akua Intaglio soy-based inks to learn how they behave and what unique things they can do that are not possible with linseed oil-based traditional inks.
