DESCRIPTION

The Ballinglen Arts Foundation was created in 1991 to bring together established international artists and emerging artists of recognized ability, from Ireland and
abroad to live and work in North Mayo, to benefit both the artists and the community.
Operating from the Ballinglen Centre in Ballycastle, a village in the disadvantaged,
remote seacoast of North County Mayo, the Foundation supports serious artists
making important work in ideal, inspiring conditions and equally it aims to create an understanding within a rural community of the meaning and importance of
contemporary art and artists.

The Ballinglen Foundation has brought together two groups, artists and farmers,
who live lives of high risk and who seek to fulfill human aspiration with their talents, perseverance and special encounters with the landscape. Each is transformed by
their connection and each offers the other confidence to embrace the new and
unknown. Foundation programs stimulate revitalization of a rural village by building
on its own inherent strengths and by fostering close connections between artists
and villagers. The Projects of the Arts Foundation have been an outstanding
success—making waves financially, spiritually, locally, nationally and internationally.

ARTISTS IN THE COMMUNITY FELLOWSHIP PROGRAM

The Fellowship Program, the heart of Foundation activities:

  •   Enables serious artists to make complete bodies of work in supportive conditions
  •   Creates relationships among the more than 120 artists from around the
world who have participated to date, and
  •   Offers exhibition opportunities for Fellows due to the international contacts and
the reach of the Foundation’s Directors.

The Fellowship Program is highly competitive. Award based, the fellowship provides
artists with a house and a studio for periods from four weeks to several months.
The Fellowship is unique in that it is a community-based residency. Artists bring
family and friends with them and are encouraged to experience the Ballycastle
community–its churches, schools, shops, pubs—and its people, with the expectation
that this interaction will: invigorate their spirit; result in work that reflects the
unique natural & social environment around Ballycastle; and also inject a new,
positive spirit and economic boost into what was a despairing community.
